Why the ancient alien idea is so popular

It took off with Erich von Däniken's 1968 bestseller "Chariots of the Gods?" and became a TV staple with the History channel's "Ancient Aliens" from 2009. The pattern is always the same: a monument looks too hard to build, so someone else must have built it.

The problem is that archaeologists keep finding the builders: their villages, tools, quarries, unfinished pieces and even their logbooks. The theory also tends to credit aliens for the works of Egyptians, Maya, Polynesians and Africans, while nobody credits aliens for cathedrals. The real story, people doing astonishing things with ropes, stone and patience, is better.

What would change our minds

An object made of materials no ancient culture could produce, found in a sealed, dated layer and checked by independent labs. Nothing like it has ever turned up.
