ExplainedA solid ordinary explanation fits the evidence.

The claim
"The stones were placed by beings with anti-gravity technology."
Where the idea comes from
Stonehenge has attracted every kind of theory, from Merlin to aliens, because of its size and solar alignment.

What the evidence shows
- Geologists traced the bluestones to quarries in the Preseli Hills of Wales, about 225 km away, where the quarry faces and tools have been found.
- In 2024 a study in Nature traced the six-tonne Altar Stone to northeast Scotland, more than 700 km away, a feat of organisation, not of physics.
- The builders' village at Durrington Walls, with houses, feasting pits and pig bones, has been excavated nearby.
- It was built and rebuilt in stages over about 1,500 years, which is not how a single advanced visitor would work.
What is still open
How the Altar Stone travelled (by sea or land) is not yet known.
Our verdict
Explained Long, hard human work that we can trace stone by stone.
