The claim
"Ancient Sanskrit texts describe working aircraft."
Where the idea comes from
The Ramayana and Mahabharata mention vimanas; the 20th-century "Vaimanika Shastra" gave them technical-sounding detail.

What the evidence shows
- In the epics, vimanas are the flying palaces and chariots of gods, described like other divine wonders.
- The Vaimanika Shastra was dictated by Pandit Subbaraya Shastry between 1918 and 1923 and published in 1952; it is not an ancient text.
- A 1974 study at the Indian Institute of Science analysed its aircraft designs and concluded they were "poor concoctions" that could not fly.
What is still open
Nothing material; the epics are literature and myth.
Our verdict
Debunked Mythology plus a 20th-century text with unflyable designs.
