ExplainedA solid ordinary explanation fits the evidence.

The claim
"US airmen saw a landed craft near RAF Woodbridge, "Britain's Roswell"."
Where the idea comes from
Airmen at the US-run RAF Bentwaters/Woodbridge bases reported lights in the forest on several nights. The deputy base commander, Lt Col Charles Halt, wrote a memo and recorded a tape.

What the evidence shows
- A bright fireball crossed southern England the first night, matching the timing of the first sighting.
- The Orford Ness lighthouse flashes every five seconds and lies exactly in the direction the airmen pointed on Halt's tape.
- The "landing marks" were examined by local police, who thought they were rabbit diggings; the radiation readings were within normal background.
- UK Ministry of Defence files released in 2009 found nothing of defence significance.
What is still open
Some witnesses added dramatic details decades later; their accounts are not consistent with each other or the early records.
Our verdict
Explained A meteor, a lighthouse and a dark forest explain the core record.
